Woohooo Wednesday

Oh my gosh, has it really been 6 weeks since I last posted?

I manage to find the time to read hundreds of blogs each week but I never seem to make the time to write on my own blog.  I really have to get better at that.

I spend countless hours pouring over everyone's blogs and I just love to see what everyone is doing.  I am constantly amazed and uplifted as I drool over the wonderful masterpieces people are working on.  The downside to that is that I sometimes feel a bit insignificant.  I mean who on earth wants to read about my little projects when there are such talented people out there in blogland producing incredible and far more interesting works of art?

I know that sounds very self depreciating but I did create this blog to document my quilty journey and share my experiences.  And right now, here, today this is what I am experiencing.  I need inspiration and I need it fast!

Despite my flat mood, I have a couple of finishes to share.

This impromptu quilt now lives on my bed.  I love its simplicity and I love the contrast between the red and white.  I got brave and quilted it myself with a geometric design all over.  For no reason whatsoever I decided to break up the geometric quilting with some flowing lines and circles.  No rhyme or reason as to why I did this.  It just felt right at the time so I went with it!

I also finished my "Soldiers Wife" quilt.  I pulled the border off and after all the to-ing and fro-ing, I decided no sashings and no border. I am really happy with that decision.  I used what was the border fabric on the back of the quilt with a few of the left over blocks.
Again I did an all over quilting design but added some feathers to the setting triangles.  This was my first attempt at free form feathers on a 'real' quilt and although they are far from perfect, I love them.  I just have to finish putting the binding on and then it will be ready to hang on my sewing room wall.

Ok, in the 10 minutes it has taken me to write this I am feeling somewhat better.  I have a couple of finishes under my belt - gotta be happy with that right?  Only 7 flimsy's left to tackle!  But what I think I need is a new project.  Nothing lifts one's spirits like a new project.  So that is what I am going to do.  I have a few folders overflowing with ideas and pictures of the 'one day I want to make' quilts.  I am going to pour over them and start something fresh, new and exciting.

Watch this space!  In the mean time, head over to Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday to be inspired by quilters from around the world.

  1. The Soldier's Wife is amazing! I'm starting on a Farmers Wife journey and only have a few blocks started. I love seeing that it's possible to get one of these samplers completed!

I understand about feeling insignificant. There is some amazing talent out there! But I think your work above is amazing, so maybe we underestimate ourselves. ;)

Recently I've joined a few linky parties and have received quite a few comments on posts, but I'm not sure if they are just to meet the requirements or actually interested in the post! Bleh..I'm ranting here. lol

Anyway, I love the parties because I find blogs like this that I know I'll enjoy and are a little off the beaten blog path. It's just another way to find more inspiration!

  3. Wow, these are two very impressive finishes. Do you own a long arm quilting machine? You quilting is beautifully adventurous. I love that you make you decisions as you go making your quilts unique and truly creative. Most mine have been like this too - so much more fun.

    1. Thanks Karen. I did the fmq on my domestic machine. It is a struggle at times but I am getting better. I find I work best without a plan - that way I am not disappointed if I stray.

  4. I often feel overwhelmed by the wonderful work I see online, too...I swear these people must have nannies! :) I think it's refreshing to get the inspiration and to love what you're doing. For me if I can get even a little sewing done in a week it's a victory! Your quilts are looking smashing, especially the FMQ! well done :)

    1. I so agree...where do people find the time? Although if I spent a little less time on the computer I might have more quilts to show!

  6. No need for self-deprecation--your quilts are gorgeous! The simplicity of the impromptu quilt is lovely, whereas the variety of blocks in the solider's wife is so very different, yet also offers a powerful graphic statement. How about a close-up of the quilting on the impromptu quilt?

    1. 2 completely different quilts I know. One very traditional (except for the colours) and one very modern. I don't have a particular style. I go with what I feel like at the time. Will post a close up of the quilting on the Retro Red quilt.

  8. OMG I love that soldiers wife quilt. I've been debating what to do with my Farmer's Wife quilt blocks and I have to say I love the look without sashing. Such a bold choice but so perfect.

  10. I feel the same way about my blog. I started it to document my quilting and to share it with others that are interested. It's is a wonderful way to be apart of the internet conversations on quilting. Both quilts are gorgeous, I especially like the quilting on the soldier's wife!

  13. Hi there from Saskatchewan, Canada. I'm participating in the spring mini quilt exchange and I'm checking out a few blogs from the participants list. Your two quilts are gorgeous!...especially the Soldiers Wife. Like the first comment on this post, I'm going to do the Farmers Wife quilt, but haven't started cutting yet. Happy Quilting!

  14. Your two quilts gave me inspiration - I have been struggling with not having enough of a fabric line for a gift quilt I am planning - but your red/white quilt just showed me it could look great with only a few rows of feature fabric. And yours is the first completed farmers wife quilt I have liked - somehow no sashing etc has actually made it look more harmonious, and the back is stunning.
