Do you ever find yourself in a bit of a funk?
This past month I have been potting in my sewing room, playing with fabric, flicking through the hundreds of projects on my 'wish list' but I am not at all inspired. I want to start a new project but I can't get myself into the right head space. I think the reason is that my style is evolving and my modest stash just does not inspire me.
When I first started my quilting adventure 14 years ago I was very drawn to the country and naive style. Then my taste evolved into a more classic style but now I find myself leaning towards more of a modern style of quilting. I hate putting labels on the different styles. I think they all merge and I flow from one to the other with startling frequency! But right here, right now I love the clean lines and 'minimalist' feel that often describes modern. Although I have started to acquire modern fabrics, my stash is top heavy with more classic styles which poses a bit of dilemma for me.
So l have set myself the challenge of trying to use my existing stash to make quilts with a modern vibe.
With that in mind I have made a wall hanging for my entry hall using improv piecing.
I also used a few scraps of "modernish" fabrics to make some colour coordinated fabric baskets.
These were surprisingly quick to put together and I plan to make several more so that eventually I have one in each colour to store my scraps in.
Other recent finishes include some paper pieced star blocks for a bee group and a quilt top for one of the many charity groups I am involved with.
Now to get back to the 'wish list' and settle on what I want to start next. Or maybe before I do that I should think about tackling the ever increasing UFO pile?
Until next time.

(excuse the picture - I took it indoors at about 9pm with terrible lighting!)

It looks like you can make modern pieces from traditional fabric! All these projects look modern to me. You could always use the traditional fabric for quilt backs...
ReplyDeleteI love those scrappy baskets!
ReplyDeleteYou & I are doing similar things! I also made an "improv" block & did some paper piecing. What a coincidence! I love your fabric boxes. Which pattern?? Linking from SewFreshQuilts
ReplyDeleteI know exactly that space you are in - hope I'm not elbowing you! Like you, my quilting is evolving, blending, melding. Love the wallhanging, and that grey and yellow block. Have fun exploring what direction to take next.
ReplyDeleteWow you've really shown that "it's what you do with fabric" that counts :)
ReplyDeleteThe wall hanging is lovely and I reckon your stars are really neat too. It's amazing what fabrics make their way out of the stash sometimes when you least expect them suit anything! Thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteDo a UFO and then reward yourself with some new fabric for your stash. I find that if I promise myself a reward, I'm much more likely to get things done.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a nice piece, the wall hanging you made from existing. It certainly does have that modern vibe. Love, love, love that white binding!!! You are on the right track. I totally believe you can use what you have, but just change up the style to get the look you are going for!
ReplyDeleteI love your wallhanging! And your fabric baskets are so pretty. I'd love to make some for myself, if only I had somewhere to display them. Maybe someday.
ReplyDeletelove the paper piecing, baskets, modern quilt.....you get the picture.....great work!!!! love it all
ReplyDeleteThese projects definitely look modern to me! You're right- it is hard to put a label on style. They do so often overlap. Love those baskets!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing at Needle and Thread Thursday!
